HOUSING DISCRIMINATION INTAKE WORKER

The City of Worcester, in partnership with Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts (LACCM), seeks a full-time Housing Discrimination Intake Worker. Under the supervision of the City’s Director of Human Rights, the Intake Worker will assist community members by providing outreach and education regarding their federal, state, and local civil rights with regard to housing discrimination. The Intake Worker will also conduct intakes and referrals with individuals and families who believe they have been the victims of housing discrimination. One to two evenings per week required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Bilingual/bicultural Spanish required; college degree preferred. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, and have strong written and verbal communication skills; must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle. Applicant should have a demonstrated commitment to civil rights.

Salary:  $16/hour with City benefit package.

Worcester Youth Center Education Director

 

Job Description: Provides personal, educational, and employment counseling to participants enrolled in WYC education programs and activities. Develop education goals and outcomes for youth participants age 14 – 24; coordinate and implement Learn to Earn Program; instruct GED classes to participants in two age groups (16- 18 and 18 – 24yrs old) and provide initial testing and evaluation for student placements. Education Director oversees all aspects of WYC education programs and activities, including after-school homework help, the WPS Alternative school program and volunteer recruitment.

 

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Experience working in academic setting with teens and young adults. Ability to conduct needs assessment, meeting the needs of members, and evaluation of member satisfaction. Good communication skills, patience, flexibility, high energy, creative and outgoing. Some knowledge of Microsoft Word, and Excel. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

 

Daily Operations:

  • Contacts neighborhood centers, the courts, detention facilities, the Department of Social Services, local school systems, and other youth serving agencies to recruit participants.
  • Responsible for intake, TABE test and orientation for all students
  • Works with Work Readiness Coordinator /Counselors to implement ISS (prior to enrollment)
  • Prepares course outline and lesson plans. Considers individual differences in choosing techniques and method of presentation that will be most effective.
  • Completes all required enrollment termination, and follow-up forms.
  • Works with Site Coordinator/Work Readiness Coordinator to ensure paperwork & assignments completed by all students
  • Work closely with WPS officials  in coordinating alternative school activities and programs
  • Maintains weekly education progress for all students/members in each subject area
  • Meets with students/members at least once a week on scheduled basis, to discuss academic problems/progress.
  • Provides students with information regarding GED testing (different locations, time, etc.)
  • Attend job related meetings, conferences and workshops
  • Assist college bound members in seeking applications, scholarships and financial aid
  • Coordinate after school education activities with Homework Coordinator
  • Assist in supervision of volunteers; including recruitment, screening, scheduling and supervising

 

All WYC Staff:

  • Role model expected behavior for youth participants
  • Establish positive relationships with youth in an empowerment and development model
  • Counsel youth and make appropriate internal/external referrals
  • Assists with WYC outreach and recruitment of youth participants for programs and initiatives
  • Enforce policies of the WYC
  • Complete incident reports within 24 hours of event occurrences
  • Provide assistance and support in the daily operations of the WYC
  • Other duties or work hours as assigned by the Executive Director or Site Coordinator

Job Description
JRI Health with the Massachusetts Commission on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Youth is seeking a Boston-based Director to develop its role as an independent voice in the complex arena of Massachusetts policies and resources to meet the needs of GLBT youth. The Commission was established in January 2007, succeeding a previous 16-year old Governor’s Commission. The new Director will combine the ability to function effectively within the health, education, and/or relevant communities/government sectors, with a capacity for new thinking and bold intellectual leadership across a variety of disciplines, including public health, education, human rights, and policy development.
 
The Director, in tandem with the Commission leadership, will articulate and promote an approach to GLBT youth funding and relevant policies that integrates public health, leadership development and empowerment across areas of work such as: HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care; and reproductive and sexual health, including prevention of sexually transmitted infections. In this role, the director must be extremely knowledgeable regarding the details of GLBT issues, policy, and programs. The ideal candidate would bring both field experience GLBT and/or youth issues and knowledge of effective advocacy in Massachusetts. The Commission seeks a director with excellent written and verbal communication skills, who can interact effectively with elected officials, government agency personnel and GLBT adult and youth stakeholders; deal comfortably with the press; testify, as necessary at the State House or before other bodies; play a leadership role; and identify new funders and Commissioners. The Director will ensure that the Commission’s goals and work plan is understood and effectively implemented; this will include regular review of the structure and staffing to assure the advancement of mutually agreed advocacy and policy goals. Finally, the director will manage the allocation of program resources, design and raise the annual budget and monitor expenditures.
 
 
Qualifications :

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Policy Analysis and Program Management:
·          Guide the Commission and its leadership to set the strategic vision and work priorities, specific committee work, and work plans of the Commission within and across key areas of work (currently suicide and violence, HIV/AIDS, and sexuality).
·         Develop and oversee plans for grassroots and policy level work.
·         Develop and supervise cutting edge analysis of Massachusetts policy, at the level of law, policy, operational policy, funding streams, and program outcomes.
·         Oversee analysis of funding patterns of Massachusetts government agencies.
·          Design and supervise field work aimed at analyzing implementation of Massachusetts policies and programs that serve GLBT youth.
·          Develop and oversee long-range plans for changing policy in key areas as identified, through multi-year plans that are clear and flexible.
Advocacy and Constituency Development:
·          Shape, articulate, and oversee implementation of outreach to key stakeholders within the GLBT community.
·          Engage with lawmakers and representatives of policy agencies and work with their offices to push the envelope on policy and program.
·          Shape media strategies; write effective and timely press releases.
Organizational Management:
·          Engage with Commissioners and the Commission’s Executive Committee, and manage its growth.
·          Develop and execute plans for commission development.
·         Design and implement funding strategies for the Commission, including developing and sustaining relationships with funders, and writing funding proposals and reports.
·          Ensure financial integrity, transparency and accountability.
·         Hire, manage, and delegate responsibilities to staff (0.5 FTE Administrative Assistant).
·          Oversee the development and use of key databases for media, grassroots, advocacy and policy contacts.
·          Oversee the development of organizational policies, manuals, and procedures as needed.

The Substance Abuse Coalition Coordinator is responsible for building and coordinating the Dorchester Substance Abuse Coalition (DSAC) which is aimed at preventing and reducing substance abuse among youth by  addressing the factors in the community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. The Coordinator will staff the DSAC and be a member of the Executive Committee, perform outreach and work with the larger community, elected officials, advocates, law enforcement, and the courts in meeting the goals of the Coalition, organize and participate in public health education and other events as agreed upon and manage and direct the work of the Coalition Subcommittees ensuring that the Coalitions goals are met.  
Qualifications: Bachelors Degree with a concentration in Community Organizing and Advocacy or related field, 3-5 years experience in coalition building, community organizing or related field, prior experience in managing grant budgets and reporting, excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills, previous community assessment skills preferred.

The Career Coach will work as an employee of Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) in an existing position to provide a full range of career assessment, counseling, and referral services to Community Health Workers (CHWs) and to act as a liaison to CHW employers. 

Responsibilities include:
·         Outreach and recruitment to identify CHWs for enrollment
·         Assessment of   CHW’s skills, interests and academic/employment background
·         Career/academic plan development
·         Identification of support service needs
·         Monitoring of client progress
·         Recruitment and relationship maintenance with employer partners

Duties and Responsibilities:
 
1.      Design and refine appropriate assessment and career coaching tools for CHWs.
 
2.      Conduct individual and group intake and assessment process focused on the development of career development plans for CHWs.
 
3.       Analyze assessment results and help each CHW develop an individual written career plan for each CHW that includes:
·        Appropriate goals in education and training and career path
·  Identification of necessary steps and appropriate resources to pursue those goals
·Identification of barriers to success and appropriate resources to address these barriers
·         Keep records of coaching performed and outcomes achieved
·         Monitor and support progress of clients through email, phone and face to face contact; adjust career plans as needed
 
4..       Coordinate outreach and recruitment to identify interested CHWs.  Assist employers and other partners to develop outreach materials and mechanisms for recruitment of CHWs.
 
5.       Conduct individual and group trainings on career path related topics.
 
6.       Cultivate and nurture relationships with CHW employers.
 
7.       Maintain accurate records and collect required demographic data and enter into computer; prepare material for grant-required reports.
 
8.       Collect and organize CHW career development resources to ensure resources are centralized and accessible to CHWs.
 
9.      Keep fellow staff and CHW Initiative coalition members informed on the needs of CHWs.  Participate in the development and implementation of new strategies and programming to better serve CHWs.
 
10.  Other related duties as required.
 
Qualifications:
 
1.       Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED required.  Bachelor’s Degree in human services, education, public health or related fields preferred.
 
2.      At least three years of experience counseling, training, or pre-cepting required.  Experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
 
3.      Strong knowledge of the CHW field, CHW career opportunities, and CHW job market.
 
4.      Knowledge of career assessment and career decision making tools and resources.
 
5.      Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.  Proven ability to multi-task and balance work projects.  Able to work independently with minimal direct supervision and achieve established goals.  Bilingual skills a plus.
 
6.      Comfortable working out of multiple locations.  Ability to travel throughout Boston .  Must be comfortable with public transportation.
 
This position will allow for some flexibility with work schedule and may require occasional evening and weekend work.  Also, this position is time limited until March of 2010 with continued employment past that date dependent on additional funding.
